Lake Fork guide John TannerSubmitted May 3, 2008

This week here at Lake Fork fishing has been fun. The lake level is at near full pool and the water surface temps are ranging from 64 to 68 degrees depending on your location on the lake. At this point in the spring there are a lot of different things going on as the spawn winds down. There are still some fish on the beds and should be for the next couple of weeks. There also a good number of fish guarding fry. These are fun to catch as they will bite topwaters such as yellow magics in the mornings and also weightless flukes and wacky style worms. One pattern that is often over looked for this time of year is to throw a floating worm. This is a great way to catch fish when they are guarding fry.

On my floating worm rig I like to use a regular trick worm in various colors and rig it on a 2/0 or 3/0 Mustad offset hook. I will normally rig it on 12 pound Gamma Edge Flourocarbon line and fish it on a 6’-6” Shimano Crucial rod. This rod and line combo has the perfect action for working a floating worm. Good areas to fish the floating worm would be down on the south end of the lake around the golf course area in the pockets were the lily pads are starting to grow. Cast the worm out letting it sink a little say about a foot and then twitch it back to the boat stopping your retrieve every so often. This is also a good time of year to flip standing timber in 5 to 8 ft with texas rigged plastics. Some of the late spawning fish will do their business at the base of the trees and a good number of fish will actually guard fry on the trees. To change gears a bit, the deep bite normally picks up this month on the main lake humps and other off shore structure. A good sonar unit is a must for locating schools of hungry bass on these places. I use a Lowrance lcX-38 hd on the consol and a Lowrance lcX-28hd on the bow of my Ranger boat. These units are awesome and make life easy locating and staying on those schools of fish. On the deep fish, go after them with Carolina rigs, deep diving cranks and heavy jigs. On the jigs go with the ¾ ounce Talon Lures football head jig in green pumpkin/watermelon or PB&J colors. Use a twin tail grub for a trailer. The football head jigs are deadly in the deep water. As the month rolls along the deep bite should get more prevalent. Hopefully these tips will help you boat more big bass this month.
